Conquering Caen

With land on one side and sea on the other, Caen is an invigorating and dynamic city. Set off by OUIBUS to conquer this very pleasant town in the north-west of France. Stroll along the water’s edge in the old harbour, the focal point of the old city, before exploring one of Caen’s numerous parks or gardens, the Colline aux Oiseaux floral park or the Botanical Garden, for instance. Caen is home to a remarkable wealth of architectural heritage. Learn more about this city that was founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century: you are sure to fall under the spell of the “town of a hundred bell towers”. Musical and theatrical walks  are a fun and fully immersive way to see the city.

Caen is a great place for those who like to get active and burn off some energy, as there’s a tree-top assault course, swimming centre, ice skating and bowling. And after all that exercise, you’ll need to a good meal to fill your belly.

Normandy is famous for its seafood including scallops and oysters, its fabulous cheeses such as camembert, Pont-L’Evêque and Neufchâtel and delicious desserts made using apples, including the classic apple tart. Caen has its own local specialities, and you cannot get back onto the OUIBUS before trying the famous Teurgoule (rice pudding) the Vallée d'Auge chicken (with apples, cider and calvados), or the local cocktail: the Embuscade, a mixture of calvados, beer, white wine and fruit syrup. Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it! For walks along the gorgeous beaches, head to the Côte de Nacre (“mother-of-pearl coast”). Here you will find history echoing on the windswept beaches and cliff tops. The emotion is palpable on the famous D-Day Landing beaches, Utah Beach and Omaha Beach.
